Taxonomic remark Phylum previously containing the single species Trichoplax adhaerens, considered the simplest animal form on morphological grounds; a second genus and species, Hoilungia hongkongensis, was added in 2018 by Eitel et al. Molecular evidence suggests that placozoans are a sister group to the other eumetazoans, with demosponge sequences diverging before the Trichoplax–cnidarian–bilaterian clade (Srivastava et al., 2008).
