Taxonomic remark Originally interpreted as infructescences of Araceae, later as central bodies of Platanus infructescences; according to Kvaček & Bogner, 2010, they have nothing to do with the Araceae and "the true nature of these bodies remains elusive. They recall fungi or lichens, but differ from these organisms in tissue structure. Another, although unlikely explanation considers these objects as galls produced by an unknown insect." [details]
