Taxonomic remark The formal fossil "Group" Calcitarcha was created by Versteegh et al., 2009 for hollow calcareous-walled microfossils of unknown affinity, known informally as calcispheres, analogous to the terms acritarchs/Acritarcha used for organic-walled microfossils of unknown affinity (Evitt, 1963). Versteegh et al., 2009 recommended that "the Calcitarcha be treated under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature"; the group is presently assigned in IRMNG to Biota incertae sedis. Pithonella and related genera (family Pithonellidae) are alternatively treated as calcareous dinoflagellates in some systems. The oldest generic name employed for calcispheres, Calcisphaera Williamson, 1880, is presently listed under Charophyceae since its type species, C. robusta, has been identified as a charophyte oogonium, although other species historically assigned to that genus belong in Calcitarcha (and possibly elsewhere).
