Taxonomic remark The family name Diatomaceae was previously used (e.g. in Parker, 1982) for around 40 genera of araphid diatoms, including Asterionella and Entopyla, however according to Prasad et al., 2001, the name is illegitimate, being based on Diatoma De Candolle, a rejected name. Prasad et al. state that "Fragilariaceae Kiitzing and Fragilariales Round are the correct names for a family and an order that include both Fragilaria and Synedra Ehrenberg (the treatment adopted by Round et ai. 1990, p. 127). It may be pointed out that the earliest familial name created for araphid pennate diatoms, Diatomaceae Dumortier (1822 sensu Simonsen 1979, p. 35; Ross 1982, p. 99), is illegitimate..."; on that basis, Diatomaceae is provisionally synonymised with Fragilariaceae in IRMNG, although AlgaeBase (2021 version) has no family placement for Diatoma De Candolle. [details]
