Taxonomic remark Genus originally erected for fossil Ephedra-like shoots; type species, E. johnianus, subsequently transferred to Ephedra and later, into Patzea (latter now Arceuthobium in Santalaceae, i.e. an angiosperm not a gnetophyte). Yang, 2006 proposed to conserve the name Ephedrites with a different type so that it could continue to be used for other fossil Ephedraceae, however this proposal was not accepted by the Nomenclature Committee for Fossil Plants (Herendeen, 2011). [details]
