Taxonomic remark From Ames et al., 1976: Abieticedripites was monotypic in 1958, and A. compactus was its implied type species. The choice of generic name is between the extant genus Cedrus and the fossil Abieticedripites. Art. 58, 1972 ICBN recognizes the priority of names of extant plants over those of fossils when taxa of the same rank are united. Abieticedripites might therefore be considered a synonym of Cedrus if A. compactus can be referred to both genera. However, on the basis of taxonomic judgement, one palynologist might choose to refer the species to the extant genus and another might prefer to use the organ genus--both could be maintained simultaneously. Abieticedripites might, however, still prove superfluous, as a synonym of Cedripites Wodehouse 1933. Although PotoniĆ© (1960, p. 79) considers Abieticedripites to be an ambiguous mono- to bisaccate genus, Malyavkina certainly indicated its morphological similarity to Cedrus.  [details]
