Taxonomic remark From Schneider & Wynne, 2019: Mesophyllaceae Heeg (1891) [is] based on Mesophylla Dumortier (1822). Although validly published, Mesophylla Dumortier was illegitimate (ICN Art. 52; Turland et al. 2018) because the genus originally included the type of Nardia S.F. Gray (1821), as noted in the Index Nominum Genericorum. The illegitimacy of Mesophylla Dumortier renders the family name Mesophyllaceae illegitimate (ICN Art. 18.3). Nevertheless, the illegitimate name Mesophyllaceae Heeg (1891) remains an earlier homonym of the validly published name Mesophyllaceae Athanasiadis (2016a), which is therefore a later homonym (Art. 53.1) [details]
