Taxonomic remark Originally described as alga according to ING. Listed as cyanophyte in AlgaeBase (syn. of Merismopedia), unidentifiable/excluded in CyanoDB, and bacterium in BIOS. Unaccepted name (no current standing in Prokaryotic nomenclature). Authority cited elsewhere (e.g. At species level) as Oersted, 1841. The generic name is retained in botanical nomenclature for purposes of homonymy. In IRMNG, listed as a syn. of Erythroconis since E. littoralis Oersted, 1841 is considered a syn. of Thiopedia rosea Winogradsky, 1888, refer e.g. Forest et al., 2015 in J.A. Bloomfield (ed), Lakes of New York State: Ecology of the Finger Lakes. Those authors state: "Certain bacteria are similar in form [to Merismopedia] ... and specimens of these bacteria have been the basis for some of the described species of Merismopedia. The earliest name of the commonly confused bacterial species is Erythroconis littoralis Oerst., but it is generally known as Thiopedia rosea Winogrdsky." [details]
