Taxonomic remark According to Taylor et al., 2009, Sciadophyton is a gametophyte stage which may represent a range of different early land plants (Stockmansella and/or Huvenia), however Doweld, 2017 (citing Schweitzer 1980, 1981, 1983) stated that Sciadophyton was the gametophyte of Zosterophyllum Penh. and proposed synonymising the (earlier published but little used) family name Sciadophytaceae with Zosterophyllaceae. This proposal was, however rejected by the Nomenclature Committee for Fossils on the grounds that "the Committee was not convinced that the gametophyte interpretation of Sciadophyton laxum is correct or broadly accepted" and that additional study of the relevant fossils is needed, refer Herendeen, 2020. Present IRMNG taxonomic placement follows Novikoff & Barabasz-Krasny, 2015, who follow Taylor et al.'s treatment at this time. [details]
