Taxonomic remark From Oskars et al., 2019: Cylichnium was initially described as a subgenus of Cylichnella Gabb, 1873 (Cylichnidae). Later, the genus was assigned to Haminoeidae by authors such as Thiele (1931), Wenz (1938), Zilch (1960) and Nordsieck (1972). The latter authors did not mention a specific reason, but Thiele (1931) referred the similarities to the radula to Haminoea (as Haminea). Later, Bouchet (1975), Valdés (2008) and Valdés and McLean (2015), on the basis of internal anatomy, suggested Cylichnium to be likely to belong in Scaphandridae. However, despite the similarly of large and heavy shell, Cylichnium also differs notably from Scaphander by having a narrower shell and possessing a wider radula with numerous lateral teeth (similar to Haminoeidae; see Valdés 2008; Valdés and McLean 2015). These conflicting characters seem to be reflected in our molecular phylogenetic analyses, in which we have included three species of Cylichnium (Fig. 3, Table 2). They all clustered together but separate from Haminoeidae and Scaphandridae. Most likely, Cylichnium warrants its own familial assignment. [details]
