Descriptive info All genera fossil (SN2000). Benton, 1993 habitat flag(s): T; stratigraphic range: Devonian (Pragian) [details]
Nomenclature According to Doweld, the family name Horneophtaceae dates from Darrah, 1960, however it may pre-date this instance, being found e.g. in AL Takhtajan, "Phylogenetic principles of the system of higher plants" (The Botanical Review, 1953). Takhtajan, 1986 dates the family to Koidzumi 1939, nomen novum for Horneaceae Hirmer 1927. [details]
Taxonomic remark In 2001, A. Doweld published the higher taxon names Langiophytaceae (family), Langiophytales (order), Langiophytopsida (class) and Langiophytophyta (phylum) for the taxonomic groups previously known as Horneophytaceae Koidzumi 1939, Horneophytales Novák, 1961 and Horneophytopsida Meyen, 1978 (=Horneophytidae Němejc, 1963) (family through class), and (sometimes) Horneophyta (the latter name possibly not formally published), based on the form taxa Langiophyton and Horneophyton, respectively, believed to be different life stages of the same fossil plant. According to the ICNafp, priority applies to names at family rank thus the correct name for the family is Horneophytaceae, unless there is a problem with the validity of that name. Names at higher ranks are not controlled by ICNafp so workers are free to use either Langiophytales / Langiophytopsida / Langiophytophyta or Horneophytales / Horneophytopsida / Horneophyta as they prefer. Currently Novikoff & Barabasz-Krasny, 2015, and Tropicos (as at 2022) use Langiophytales (etc.) while other recent workers use (e.g.) Horneophytopsida instead (example: Cascales-Miñana et al., 2019, Lethaia 52: 445-453). In IRMNG at this time we use Horneophytaceae / Horneophytales / Horneophytopsida / Horneophyta since these are in general the earlier published names, however recognising that Langiophytaceae / Langiophytales / Langiophytopsida and Langiophytophyta are also in use concurrently, even though Langiophytaceae is a later published family name than Horneophytaceae for the same taxon and may therefore be incorrect.
