Taxonomic remark The systematic position of Cloudinidae is uncertain. Cloudina Germs, 1972 was originally classified as a member of the Early Cambrian class Cribricyathea, an assignment accepted by Glaessner (1976) who also proposed that Cloudina was similar to the annelid worms, particularly serpulid polychaetes. However, Hahn & Pflug (1985) and Conway Morris et al. (1990) doubted both Germs' and Glaessner's suggested relationships, and were unwilling to classify it to anything more than its own family. From Selly et al., 2020: The higher level taxonomy and phylogeny of the cloudinomorphs [=Cloudinidae and potentially related forms] remains largely unresolved, with interpretations ranging from algae (Beurlen & Sommer 1957; Tarhan et al. 2018) to eumetazoa (Germs 1972; Glaessner 1976; Hahn & Pflug 1985; Conway Morris et al. 1990; Grant 1990; Chen & Sun 2001; Hua et al. 2005; Cortijo et al. 2010; Vinn & Zaton 2012). [details]
