Taxonomic remark Conodonts (conodont animals) are generally accepted as vertebrates, see e.g. Donoghue & Keating, 2014. For a contrary view (conodonts are not vertebrates) see Turner et al., 2010. The group Protoconodontida, previously classified among the conodonts, however appear to be fossilised chaetognath teeth (refer Protoconodontida page). [details]
