Taxonomic remark Includes Agalmatoaster, Clavodiscoaster, Discoasteroides, Eudiscoaster, Gyrodiscoaster, Heliodiscoaster, Hemidiscoaster, Radiodiscoaster, Truncodiscoaster, Turbodiscoaster (see Young & Bown, 1997). A fossil-only genus; 1 extant species (D. planktonicus) had been assigned to this otherwise fossil genus, but is in fact a dinoflagellate cyst bearing discoaster-like ornamentation, Scrippsiella regalis (was Rhabdothorax gerenus). A nom. cons. prop. by Doweld, 2014, recommended for acceptance by Herendeen, 2016. Technically illegitimate when published by Tan in 1931 since the type taxon was originally placed in Eu-discoaster which has priority by date; however (almost) all subsequent workers use Discoaster in preference to Tan's original genera Eu-discoaster, Helio-discoaster and Hemi-discoaster (with or without original hyphenation). Published in this form in 1931 as a [supposed] emended spelling of Eu-discoaster Tan Sin Hok, 1927; Nannotax3 and Farinacci catalogue (among others) use 1927 as the date for this emended spelling, thus: Discoaster Tan Sin Hok, 1927 ("ex Eu-discoaster, corrected by Tan Sin Hok, 1931, p. 93"), however Doweld, 2014 (accepted by Herendeen, 2016) lists Discoaster as a new name, first published in 1931. Authority given as Tan Sin Hok in many sources, however Tan is surname, Sin and Hok are forenames as per Indonesian practice. [details]
