Taxonomic remark The status of this genus is confused. GRIN (2011) and Korotkova et al., 2017 treat this genus as a syn. of Acanthocereus, however that is disputed by Kiesling, 2011, who proposes that Monvillea should be retained as a distinct genus. Other sources (POWO, 2024 and caryophyllales.org) include Monvillea in the synonymy of Praecereus (which is however a later genus, so the basis for this synonymy is unclear), a position followed in IRMNG at this time unless the latter compilations change their view. By contrast, Franck et al., 2017, consider Praecereus a synonym of Monvillea, but that both should be placed within the genus Cereus "pending further taxonomic clarification in the group". [details]
