Taxonomic remark Tessler et al., 2018 place Americobdellidae as the sole family in a new suborder, Americobdelliformes within order Hirudinida (in subclass Hirudinea), a treatment that has not yet been integrated with that of previous works e.g. Ruggiero et al., 2015, who recognise the orders Acanthobdellida, Arhynchobdellida (which includes Hirudinidae) and Rhynchobdellida for leeches, within subclass Hirudinea.
