Taxonomic remark A homotypic synonym of Protobrachyoxylon R. Holden 1913 according to Index Nominum Genericorum, however this name (Protocupressinoxylon) is in use by current workers; for a discussion of associated nomenclatural issues refer e.g. Philippe & Bamford, 2008 and Philippe et al., 2010. Bodnar, 2017 formally proposed to conserve this name (with a new type) against the earlier published name Protobrachyoxylon, a proposal that was rejected by the Nomenclature Committee for Fossils (Herendeen, 2020) on the grounds that [additional] "taxonomic research on Protocupressinoxylon, Protobrachyoxylon and Brachyoxylon is necessary before any informed decisions can be made". [details]
