Taxonomic remark pro Proto- Haeckel 1868 (Nomen. Zool.) (possibly error since Protomyxa is the earlier name and is listed as accepted elsewhere). From Wylezich et al., 2014: According to Page (1987), the family Reticulomyxidae includes the genera Pontomyxa Topsent, 1892, Reticulomyxa Nauss, 1949 and Thalassomyxa Grell, 1985. Berney et al. (2013) have recently shown by gene sequence comparison that the marine genus Thalassomyxa belongs to the vampyrellids (Endomyxa, Cercozoa). There are no gene sequence data for Pontomyxa flava. This species, however, is to be excluded from the Reticulomyxidae as defined here due to the lack of bidirectional granular streaming and its exclusive occurrence in marine habitats (Rhumbler 1904). This taxon might be related to the endomyxans (Cercozoa) like Thalassomyxa. [details]
