Taxonomic remark From Sarjeant & Stancliffe, 1994: It was their early occurrence in the geological column, surely, that caused Deflandre to wish to utilize these forms as basis for a new genus. By his own admission (ibid., p. 2388) there was an overlap in morphology with Archaeohystrichosphaeridium Timofeyev 1959 - a genus shown subsequently to be invalid, since no type species was designated, but later validated by Loeblich Jr. and Tappan 1976, p. 303 - the sole differentiating feature being small size. This produces yet another quandary, as no reasons were given for a separation from Deflandre's own, equally small genus Micrhystridium ... This genus urgently merits revision. Until that is done, its overlap in definition with other existing genera-in particular, Micrhystridium and Polygonium - renders it effectively unuseable. [details]
