Taxonomic remark Basionym: Synedra subg. Thalassionema H. Peragallo & M. Peragallo, 1900. Round et al. have authority as A. Grunow ex Hustedt, 1932. The taxonomic history of this name is complex; it was not validly published by Grunow in Van Heurck 1881, first validly published by Mereschkowsky 1902 accepting Grunow's provisional genus, also published as a subgenus by Peragallo & Peragallo (1901) and raised to genus by M. Peragallo in 1921. Correct authorship is Grunow ex Mereschkowsky, 1902 according to AlgaeBase (2017). [details]
