Taxonomic remark From Gaarder, 1967: In 1965 LECAL (p. 67, fig. G, PI. 2, 5) presented a species: Lacrymasphaera angelieri observed off the coast of Israel, represented in her paper by a drawing and an electron micrograph of an "épine buccale". The coccolith in the electron micrograph most probably is the proximal link of an Ophiaster arm. The author has repeatedly observed Ophiaster cells with only one single or several proximal arm links left, and these could easily be mistaken for cells with "épines buccales". However, LECAL states that the "six elements buccaux" are placed with their large base "au niveaux de la zone flagellée". If she really has seen flagella in this zone, it can be no Ophiaster.
