Descriptive info Late Pre-Cambrian; Kanshi, Zaïre. (Index Nominum Genericorum) [details]
Taxonomic remark Both spellings [Cholorogloeaopsis/Chlorogloeaopsis] appear in the publication; since the fossil genus is compared with the modern genus Chlorogloea, it is assumed that 'Chlorogloeaopsis' was meant. (Index Nominum Genericorum).; corrected spelling formally introduced by Butterfield et al., 1994. Also as Cholorogloeaopsis (original variant spelling). Regarding taxonomic placement, Sergeev et al., 2012 state: "The multicellular filaments of Chlorogloeaopsis are considered either as remains of Stigonema-like stigonematalean cyanobacteria or eukaryotic algae, e. g. green or red. In some latest publications Chlorogloeaopsis has been interpreted as green algae, and similar trichomes (still described as Polysphaeroides) are reported from the Palaeoproterozoic rocks (Sun & Zhu, 1998) and are also considered as a proof of early appearance of these eukaryotic microorganisms in the fossil record (Teyssedre, 2006). Therefore, we prefer to keep this taxon as Incertae Sedis." Index Nominum Algarum lists this as a nom. illeg., to be treated as a homonym (confusable name) of the extant genus Chlorogloeopsis A.K. Mitra & D.C. Pandey, 1967 (Hapalosiphonaceae, formerly Chlorogloeopsidaceae), although no replacement name has been proposed. [details]
