Taxonomic remark Authority given in WoRMS as Lohmann, 1932 (?in error) and elsewhere as Lohmann emend. Pascher, 1932. Previously classified in green algae, xanthophytes, and chrysophytes, centrohelid heliozoans or incertae sedis; according to 18S rDNA sequencing, M. mediterranea groups with NC5 clade (mostly environmental sequences), 2 of which are marine Choanocystidae (Centroplasthelida, heliozoans), refer Zlatogursky et al., 2021.
