Taxonomic remark Systematic position uncertain; originally described as putative land plants intermediate between algae and bryophytes. Smith & Butterfield, 2013 suggested a coralline red algal affinity; Edwards et al., 2018 suggest that Nematothallus may in fact represent a lichenised fungus. [details]
