Taxonomic remark From Philippe & Bamford, 2008: see Philippe and Cantrill (2007) for lectotypification and lectotype illustration ... As clearly explained by Medlyn and Tidwell (1979) Pinoxylon is the correct name for Protopiceoxylon Gothan. These authors wanted to propose conservation for the latter generic name, but never did so. This proposal is still badly wanted, all the more since several other authors (e.g. Süß and Velitzelos, 1993), following Kräusel (1949: 183), use the genus Pinoxylon for woods which are assigned by other authors to Protopiceoxylon (see e.g. Duan, 2000).
