Taxonomic remark Originally described as a chitinozoan; later transferred to the melanosclerites. Du et al., 2022 synonymise the type species, M. quadrupedis, with Melanostylus coronifer Eisenack & Kühne, 1963, but it is unclear to which generic name they give priority (full work not seen) or whether their conclusion is yet accepted by other workers.
