Taxonomic remark Placed in subfamily Thylacaelurinae in McKenna & Bell, 1997, that subfamily unallocated in Dermoptera; in Plagiomenidae in PaleoBiologiy DB, however citing Van Valen 1967. From Jackson & Thorington, 2012: The placement of this subfamily remains uncertain as it was originally placed in the family Plagiomenidae by Van Valen (1967:277) and Bown and Rose (1979:102), with uncertainty, whereas McKenna and Bell (1997:326) did not include it within a specific family but placed it directly within the suborder Dermoptera. From Rose, 2008: Thylacaelurus has been considered a didelphid (Russell, 1954), a lipotyphlan (Szalay, 1969), or a plagiomenid (Van Valen, 1967; Krishtalka and Setoguchi, 1977; Bown and Rose, 1979; Storer, 1984; Ostrander, 1987), but the last assignment has never been secure. Recently described (isolated) lower molars referred to the genus (Storer, 1984) appear to strengthen the likelihood that it is correctly included in Plagiomenidae, but until more complete specimens are available its affinities will remain tenuous. [details]
