Taxonomic remark Treated as a subfamily of Borhyaenidae in McKenna & Bell, 1997, but as a separate family by recent authors, e.g. see Eldridge et al., 2019. Hathlyacynidae is an alternative spelling preferred by some workers, but the name on which it is based (Hathlyacynus Ameghino, 1894) is an objective synonym of Hathliacynus Ameghino, 1887 according to McKenna & Bell.
