Taxonomic remark Described as a trace fossil (ichnogenus); treated by some authors as a synonym of the ichnogenus Nereites McLeay, 1839, however retained as separate by Bouchemla et al., 2021, refer discussion therein (those authors describe this taxon as "either the endogenous burrow, or the trail of a benthonic organism, most likely a polychaete worm"). According to Bing et al., 2017 (presently followed in IRMNG), Neonereites (cited therein as 'Neonereites' Seilacher, 1960) is not a trace fossil but a body fossil ("modular fossil") with affinities to Palaeopascichnus. [details]
