Taxonomic remark Hypercalcified demosponges with a chaetetid calcareous skeleton, previously of varied systematic assignment including sponges, bryozoans, corals and coralline algae; accepted as an order in Profiera in The PaleoBiology DB and various recent literature, however according to West, 2011, "the former systematic group Chaetetida based on the calcareous skeleton was redefined as a morphological grade with no high systematic value" (quoting work by Wood, 1987 and elsewhere); the same author notes that currently, chaetetid skeletons occur in at least three demosponge orders: the Hadromerida, the Poecilosclerida, the Agelasida, and possibly in others. WoRMS (2023 version: entry last edited by R. van Soest, 2021) lists Chaetetes Fischer, 1830 ("type" of order Chaetetida) in family Suberitidae, order Suberitida. [details]
