Taxonomic remark From Oren et al., 2022: Proposals to establish the phylum Cyanobacteria Woese et al. 1985 or Cyanobacteria (ex Stanier 1974) Cavalier-Smith 2002 were made before the rank of phylum was included in the rules of the ICNB/ICNP. Recently, the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP) decided to place the rank of phylum under the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP), with phylum names ending in –ota derived from the name of a type genus. However as at 2024, Guiry/AlgaeBase continued to use Cyanobacteria (with authorship Whittaker & Margulis, 1978) as the botanical name for this class. [details]
