Taxonomic remark "Group" (treated in IRMNG as a phylum) established by Evitt (1963) for organic-walled microfossils with a central cavity, not demonstrably related to known groups e.g. dinoflagellates; probably represents cysts of unicellular algae/protists in the main along with perhaps "eggs, cysts, and mature tests of assorted one celled and higher organisms" (Evitt, 1963), with a long geological history. According to convention and in line with Evitt's original proposal, acritarchs are treated according to the botanical nomenclatural Code (ICNafp). As at 2023, acritarchs are treated in IRMNG in kingdom Plantae, in line with their botanical nomenclature and the suggestion by Moczydłowska et al., 2011 that their earliest representatives probably correspond to chlorophyte algae.
