Descriptive info Strobilus; Lower Triassic; left bank of Lower Tunguska River, opposite to Gagarij Island, Siberia, Russia. (Index Nominum Genericorum) [details]
Taxonomic remark Initially referred to lycopsids, however some but not all of the the structure of the axes are more similar to pteridospermophytes. According to Mogucheva & Naugolnykh, 2010, "One of [the elements of the Triassic Korvunchan mesophyte coniferous–fern flora] is the Gagariostrobus, a plant with reproductive organs of an extremely peculiar morphology, initially attributed to the lepidophytes. ... It is possible that the strobiloid organs of the G. cylindricus are homologous to the compact clusters of the sporangia of one of the groups of the Leptosporangiatae ferns." [details]
