Taxonomic remark Originally assigned to the Cyanophyceae, this genus is considered by P. Frémy (1934) to represent a developmental stage of Bangia Lyngbye 1819. (Index Nominum Genericorum). Sutherland et al., 2011 state: Aspalatia Erceg. (1927: 82) was originally assigned to the Cyanophyceae, but was considered by Frémy (1934) to represent a developmental stage of Bangia. The three described species of Aspalatia remain poorly documented: Aspalatia crassior Erceg. (type of genus), Aspalatia andalousica P. González, and Aspalatia tenuior Erceg. [details]
