Taxonomic remark Listed (doubtfully) in Gypsonictopidae in McKenna & Bell, 1997. Gunnell et al., 2007 state: As suggested by Van Valen (1967), Stilpnodon (Simpson, 1935) may fill this gap [a dearth of geolabidid-like forms in the Paleocene]. Though Simpson (1935, 1945) placed th[is] genus in his Nyctitheriidae, Romer (1966) transferred it to the Adapisoricidae and Carroll (1988) referred Stilpnodon to the Palaeoryctidae. McKenna (1960a) discussed the genus with respect to members of his then new subfamily Geolabidinae, stating that if Stilpnodon is a member of that group "... it would be necessary to regard it as more advanced than Geolabis [= Centetodon] itself."
