Descriptive info Marine, fossil: Devonian (Sepkoski 2002). Upper Devonian (Frasnian); U.S.S.R. (near Shugurovo, Tatar A.S.S.R.). (Index Nominum Genericorum) [details]
Taxonomic remark Originally assigned to the Foraminifera, this genus was transferred to the algae by B.I. Chuvashov (1965). (Index Nominum Genericorum). Listed as foraminiferan (family Ptychocladiidae) in some sources; considered a synonym of one life stage of the fossil calcareous alga Epiphyton by Luchinina, 2009. Treated as Problematica in IRMNG following Feng et al., 2010, who write: Antropov (1950) described Shuguria from the Frasnian of Russia. Together with Izhella, it has commonly been allied with Renalcis. ... Antropov (1950) regarded Shuguria as a foraminifer. Because of its broad similarities to Renalcis it has also commonly been regarded as a cyanobacterium (Johnson, 1964, p. 106; Wray, 1967, p. 45). In contrast, Stephens and Sumner (2002, p. 232) suggested that Canning Basin "renalcids" (Izhella, Shuguria) may be calcified biofilm clusters. [details]
