Taxonomic remark Proposed as subgenus of Procavia; proposed species, Procavia (Prohyrax) antiqua a probable synonym of Procavia capensis, refer Pickford, 2005, Palaeontologia Africana 41: 141-161. On the basis that Broom's name was preoccupied by Prohyrax Stromer, 1926 (same family), Kretzoi & Kretzoi, 2000 proposed the substitute name Plesiohyrax, but since Broom's subgenus is not currently treated as valid, that name is not necessary.
