Taxonomic remark Enigmatic fossil, some may be Xenophyophorea (see Swinbanks, 1982), others algae (see Tappan, 1980). Authority cited in ING as Savi & Meneghini, 1851. Rona et al., 2009 describe extant material corresponding to P. nodosum which is considered to represent either a trace fossil (burrow of the graphoglyptid type, maker unknown), or a compressed form (body fossil) of a hexactinellid sponge [details]
