Taxonomic remark A homotypic synonym of Sporangites J.W. Dawson 1863 according to Index Nominum Genericorum. From Christopher, 1976: The generic name Sporites was originally established by H. Potonié (1893, p. 185) for the reception of large megaspores, but was subsequently used by numerous palynologists to describe a wide variety of microspores. R. Potonié (1952) elevated [in fact: re-used] the name Sporites to a suprageneric taxonomic ranking [Anteturma, above Turma, approximately equivalent to class, for all spores; cf. Anteturma Pollenites for all pollen], and most palynologists have abandoned the generic name Sporites in favor of more descriptive names. If the information in ING is correct, technically Sporites is a synonym of Sporangites Dawson since it shares the same type (S. papillata, interpreted as a sporangium not a spore on account of its large size, refer Schopf et al., 1944), however the name is retained here (not synonymised) since it has subsequently been used as a genus of spores, not sporangia. By contrast, Andrews, 1955 states that the type of Sporites is S. plicatus, designated by Schopf, 1938 in an emendation. (For unknown reason, this generic name is omitted from Andrews' 1970 update of the same work). [details]
