Fjerdingstad, 1979 in his book "Sulfur Bacteria" cites this genus in Chlorobiaceae (=Chlorobacteriaceae) following Bergey, but notes "classification as bacteria appears to be doubtful". Initially described as an alga, therefore the name is validly published and has priority over Tetrachloris A. Pascher & R. Jahoda, 1928 (Chlorophyta), the latter now Quadrichloris Fott, 1959.
