Taxonomic remark Although some species described in this genus are algae, the type has been shown to be spores of a microsporidian, Gurleya marssoniella Vávra, by Komárek & Vávra (1968) [IRMNG editor's note: that combination never validly published; this species, original name M. elegans Lemmermann, was subsequently returned to the genus Marssoniella, now an accepted genus in Microsporidia, refer Vávra et al., 2005]. The generic name is retained in botanical nomenclature for purposes of homonymy. (Index Nominum Genericorum). Originally described (in error) as a blue-green alga: see Lee et al. 2000. CyanoDB (2021 version) erroneously still lists Marssoniella as a synonym of Gurleya. [details]
