Taxonomic remark From original description: Specimens of Globus gossipinus were tentatively attributed by Vidal (1981) to the acritarch genus Comasphaeridium. Later studies under interference contrast microscopy revealed that the spheroids are formed by tightly interwoven aggregates of sub-micron size thread-like cylindrical filaments. The filaments are probably too thin to be sheaths of colonially arranged cyanobacteria. A more plausible affinity for the aggregates is that they were formed by colonial bacteria which probably inhabited the sediment-water interface, most likely during periods of increased oxygenation. [details]
