Taxonomic remark Described as a calcified microproblematicum, and treated as an accepted name in recent sources, however preoccupied both in zoology (by Sphaerina Van der Wulp, 1890, Diptera) and in botany (by Sphaerina V.S. Maljavkina, 1949, fossil spores/pollen; authorship also given as Maljavkina 1949 ex Delcourt & Sprumont 1959); no published replacement name known as at 2022. In the original description, the genus is compared with some other microproblematica such as Archaesphaera Suleymanov and Calcisphaera Williamson, previously regarded as possible foraminifers or algae; in IRMNG (2022), Archaesphaera is listed as a foraminifer, while the type species of Calcisphaera is treated as a charophyte.
