Taxonomic remark Listed as syn. of Aplocnemus Stephens, 1830, by modern authors, even though Elicopis is the earlier name. Liberti, 2019 states: "the use of this name [i.e., Aplocnemus], instead of Elicopis Stephens, 1829 has been recently explained (Peacock, 1987; Liberti, 1995)" (those references not seen). Stephens' 1829 citation of Elicopis attributes the name to Bess.[ers]; in 1830 he writes: "Bessers' MSS.? name, Elicopis, is too closely allied to Hellicopis of the Systema Glossatorum of Fabricius, published in the sixth volume of Illiger's magazine, to be retained. I have therefore been compelled to substitute the present appellation..." Although technically validly published by Stephens in 1829, Elicopis is possibly therefore best viewed as a nomen oblitum.
