Taxonomic remark n.n. pro Galea Meyen 1833 (Nomen. Zool.). Kretzoi & Kretzoi, 2000 considered that Galea Meyen, 1833 was preoccupied by Galea Meuschen, 1787 (Echinodermata) and proposed the present replacement name, however most current workers treat names from Meuschen's 1787 publication as unavailable and thus Galea Meyen, 1833 remains in current use in Mammalia. 2 other earlier usages (both in Echinodermata) also require consideration: Galea Cuvier, 1817 ("ex Klein") is mentioned only in synonymy and is thus unavailable, while Galea Smith, 1817, currently a synonym of Echinocorys, appears to be available and should probably be declared a nomen oblitum (as an unused senior homonym of Galea Meyen).
