Taxonomic remark From original description: The systematic relationships of Caveacus n. gen. are problematical, and it is not known whether the organism bore one, or a number, of the sclerites. One comparison that might be made is with such lapworthellid tommotiids as Lapworthella ludvigseni Landing, 1984, which tend to fill the internal cavity with heavy phosphate deposits; however, Caveacus n. genus sclerites lack the characteristic(?) transverse and radial microsculpture of lapworthellids and have a very shallow internal cavity. A shallow internal cavity and internal basal accretion are known in agmatans (see Yochelson, 1977), and it is possible that Caveacus n. gen. might be the first known phosphate secretor of this group. An affinity with Early Cambrian pseudoconodonts or protoconodonts s.s. is unlikely, because the internal cavity of elements of these groups extends to the tip of the element. [details]
