Taxonomic remark Name not validly published (as at January 2019), however the name is in use in the current literature. Attribution is unclear: CyanoDB (2011) gave the authority as Waterbury, Watson & Valois, 1988, however in that paper the species was named Erythrosphaera; as at 2019, CyanoDB gives no authority. Komárek et al., 2014 give the authority as Zehr et al., 2001, however the taxon is unnamed in that paper. In Capone (Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2001) this statement occurs: "please note that the coccoid marine cyanbacterium, Erythrosphaera marina, has been redesignated Crocosphaera watsonii; J Waterbury, personal communication."
