Taxonomic remark Butterfield, 2005 reconstructs Cheilofilum as a "relatively complex, multicellular eukaryote, ... The filamentous, occasionally branched thallus was composed of large cylindrical cells, and extended via rupture of cell termini.", with "close analogues among the annellophores and/or phialides (conidiophores) of various hyphomycetous fungi, though its large size and absence of an associated mycelium argue against its placement within the Fungi."; in IRMNG it is therefore currently allocated to Algae incertae sedis, since higher (=vascular) plants had not evolved at that time. One of its components may be a co-occuring form-taxon described as a new acritarch genus and species, Plicatosphaeridium impostor. [details]
