Taxonomic remark Fossil "Group" created by Versteegh et al., 2009 for spherical calcareous-walled fossils of unknown affinity (some potentially calcareous dinoflagellates), known informally as calcispheres, analogous to term acritarchs/Acritarcha used for organic-walled microfossils of unknown affinity (Evitt, 1963). For convenience, presently assigned to parent group Plantae in IRMNG although affinities are unknown (or may be with Chromista). Versteegh et al., 2009 recommended that "the Calcitarcha be treated under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature"; Pithonella, formerly considered a calcitarch, is interpreted as a calcareous dinoflagellate in family Thoracosphaeraceae (Peridiniales) by Wendler et al., 2013. Presently treated as a phylum in IRMNG; if moved to a lower level, could be treated under Algae incertae sedis, the latter presently included in IRMNG at phylum level. [details]
