Taxonomic remark The affinities of this monogeneric family are currently unclear. Parker (1982) assigned it tentatively to the dinoflagellate order Syndiniales; in Lee et al. Spiromonas is stated to be "unassignable to a higher taxon"; in WoRMS (2017) (ex AlgaeBase) it is assigned to Desmomastigales; in AlgaeBase (2017) the genus Spiromonas Perty and its family are presently in Dinophyceae incertae sedis. Ruggiero (2014) places the family in Bacillariophyceae, which is clearly an error. IRMNG synonymy and placement tentatively follows Kudo, 1931, who places Spiromonas in Amphimonadaceae, currently Protozoa incertae sedis. [details]
